LaVal Anderson graduated from Upper Iowa University with a reading endorsement and taught 3rd grade for 14 years. In 2013 she switched to small group reading and math support. LaVal spent the next 6 years in that role with grades K-3. Her small groups allowed her to focus on the skills of her reading endorsement and relish in her passion of math. In 2019, LaVal returned to the classroom teaching 2nd grade. Raising a special education student, a gifted student, and a down-right silly student she understands the variety of joys and struggles a parent encounters. LaVal says, “I don’t just love teaching… I love children. Teaching is not my job…it is my calling.” During her spare time LaVal volunteers at Des Moines Dream Center and enjoys days at the lake with family and friends.
Hi, my name is Tami Boehler. I am so excited for another year at Brubaker! I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Upper Iowa University and a Master of Arts degree from Viterbo University. I also earned an English Language Learner (ELL) Endorsement from Grand View University. I am married and have two sons. Much of my free time is spent watching my sons at sporting events and riding our motorcycle with my husband.
Hello! My name is Kori Cooper and I am a special education teacher at Brubaker. I have been teaching special education in the Des Moines Public School District since 2001. Prior to moving to Des Moines, I taught for 10 years in Winnebago, Nebraska. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Morningside College.
Hello! My name is Heather Frew and I am so happy to be working at Brubaker! This is my fourth year at Brubaker and my nineteenth year teaching in the district. I’ve been a classroom teacher, a Reading Recovery teacher, a literacy coach and an interventionist. My favorite position is working as an interventionist and supporting students with their reading and math skills.
I received my bachelor’s degree at the University of Iowa and my master’s degree at Viterbo. When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my husband and two children.
I grew up on the East side of Des Moines attending McKee and Hoyt. I am so glad to back in my old neighborhood. I have been teaching in Des Moines for the last 19 years with 17 of those years being in 2nd grade. I am married and have two young children just starting school so I am beginning to look at by job a lot different now that I can see from a parent’s perspective. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. Go Bulldogs!

Welcome to Brubaker Elementary! My name is Brandi VanHorn and I am a second grade classroom teacher.
This school year will be filled with educational and fun experiences. I am dedicated to doing everything I can to make second grade a success for all my students. It is exciting to work with the children and the Brubaker staff, supporting their future and journey to be lifelong learners.
I have been teaching elementary students for over ten years. My three children all attended Brubaker and I am happy that I have the opportunity to be on this school’s staff. My bachelor’s degree is from Upper Iowa University and my journey of learning continues as I pursue my higher education goals through Buena Vista University.
