Brubaker News For The Week of November 12, 2012

Brubaker elementary located at 2900 E 42nd street in Des Moines has a lot of great resources and a number of wonderful things going on. One of the things is our exercise resources. Within the playground of the elementary school is a top of the line black top jog walk trail that spans a third of a mile. Every student has completed at least five miles in just two months! Several classes take at least one lap every day at recess and have already achieved a half marathon. At this pace, all students will complete a combined distance of a marathon by the end of the school year.

There are also an amazing group of parents at Brubaker who are involved in a volunteer group called Thursday Night Volunteers. This group of parents and other family members meet in the Brubaker work room once or twice a month and do tasks for teachers. The staff provides a small snack for the workers.

Kyle Scheer and Melissa Osby are the leaders of a student council group at Brubaker. The students in the student council group work on activities that better our school and expanded community. The last activity they did raised money to support victims of Hurricane Sandy. Last week, students at Brubaker who donated a dollar or more were allowed to wear a hat for the day. The staff and students at Brubaker raised $375.00! This money was given to the American Red Cross. Another current fundraiser we are working on is a food drive. Brubaker works annually with The Food Bank of Iowa to do what they can to help stock their pantry shelves. Students bring cans throughout the week to donate to the food bank. The students in each class are keeping track of their total donations and the classes who donate the most cans in K-2nd and 3-5th will earn a doughnut party for their classroom.
